Mail Server FAQ

Q: What is the host name for the new mail server?

A: mail.sci.utah.edu

Q: What protocols are supported by the new mail server?

A: smtp/ssl use port 465, imap/ssl use port 993.

Q: What names do I use when I set up my client for the new mail server?

A: Use mail.sci.utah.edu for both incoming and outgoing mail server.

Q: Can I use secure IMAP for my emails?

A: Yes. Just check secure connection or set port to 993 in your imap setting.

Q: How do I set up mail forwarding on the new mail server?

A: Login from web at https://mail.sci.utah.edu. Then click "Rules" on the title bar. Check "Redirect All Mail to:" in the bottom section. Then fill in the email address you want to forward your SCI emails to, one each line.

There are three addtional options, "Keep a Copy", "Do not Redirect Automatic Messages", "Preserve To/CC fields", you can choose depending on your needs.

Q: How do I set up my .forward for the new mail server?

A: Our new mail server does not support .forward. See above question regarding mail forwarding.

Q: How do I set up procmailrc to auto-sort my incoming emails?

A: Sorting incoming emails via procmailrc script is not supported. You may set up similar filtering through web.

Login from web at https://mail.sci.utah.edu. Then click "Rules" on the title bar. Fill in the blank next to "Add Rule" with a name for that rule, then click on "Add Rule".

Click "Edit" next to the new rule to bring up another page "Automated Processing". On this page, you can define how and what to do about your new emails for this rule.

Q: How do I access my email from web?

A: Open your browser and visit https://mail.sci.utah.edu. Login, then select "Mailboxes".

Q: What email clients are supported?

A: Most mainstream email clients are support for both Unix and Windows platform.

Q: What about supporting roaming users?

A: For users connect from other networks, you can set up your client to use secure smtp auth. Ports 465, and 587 are avaiable for such connections. Please note some networks only allow connections on port 25 (not secure) to local smtp server.
