Production Software

QuickTime Pro

Apple designed the QuickTime architecture as a powerful, extensible and flexible platform for creating digital media that maintains backwards compatibility with previous versions as new ones come to market.  The .mov file format sets QuickTime apart from other media platforms. Structured like a "container," it can hold a variety of media types such as audio, video, text, images and sprites.

Final Cut Studio

The faster the tools, the more time you have to be creative. Final Cut Studio makes it even easier to edit quickly, accurately, and flexibly with a range of interface enhancements that make everything from editing and trimming to sweetening and finishing more efficient.

iShowU

iShowU is designed specifically to be easy to use. If you don't want to customize anything, it'll work straight out of the tin. All you have to do is hit 'Record' and you'll have a nice little video on your desktop in no time.  When there's not much going on (i.e: you're not moving the mouse) iShowU will capture at a lesser frame rate.

Camtasia Studio

Camtasia Studio captures video of anything on your screen, with no compromise between quality and file size.  Camtasia Recorder puts all your options in one spot, to get you started faster.  Dial in your dimensions or select a window or region. Recorder can even lock onto an application window, providing a pixel-perfect fit between your subject matter and the recording area.

FFMpeg

FFmpeg is a complete, cross-platform solution to record, convert and stream audio and video. It includes libavcodec - the leading audio/video codec library.  FFmpeg can be hooked up with a number of external libraries to add support for more formats. None of them are used by default, their use has to be explicitly requested by passing the appropriate flags to `./configure'. FFmpeg can make use of the OpenCORE libraries for AMR-NB decoding/encoding and AMR-WB decoding.  You can use the -formats option to have an exhaustive list.

recordMyDesktop

recordMyDesktop is a desktop session recorder for GNU/Linux that attempts to be easy to use, yet also effective at it's primary task.  As such, the program is separated in two parts; a simple command line tool that performs the basic tasks of capturing and encoding and an interface that exposes the program functionality in a usable way.

The commandline tool (which essentially is recordMyDesktop), is written in C, while there are two frontends, written in python with pyGtk (gtk-recordMyDesktop) and pyQt4 (qt-recordMyDesktop).

Before using recordMyDesktop, it is suggested that you visit the Documentation section of this site and in particular, read the User Guide, in order to get a better understanding of how to use the program.

Also, recordMyDesktop produces files using only open formats These are theora for video and vorbis for audio, using the ogg container. (To learn more about free formats visit Xiph.org, the foundation responsible for the aformentioned formats).
