Computer Scientist - Visualization Task Lead

The Oak Ridge National Laboratory’s Leadership Computing Facility (OLCF) has the charge to develop and apply transformational computational science capabilities in support of advances in our understanding of the physical world. As a designated User Facility, the OLCF delivers leadership-class computing for science and engineering; focuses on grand-challenge science and engineering applications; procures largest-scale computing systems and develops high-end operational and application software.

The National Center for Computational Sciences (NCCS) in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in East Tennessee seeks to hire a Computer Scientist within the Scientific Computing Group to serve as the Visualization Task Lead with the responsibility to coordinate the Visualization Liaison activities to users of the OLCF computing resources.

With the continuing advances in data acquisition and simulation techniques, increasingly large 3D data sets have to be processed and interactively displayed for real-time visual exploration. The emphasis of the open position in this context is on the efficient scalable out-of-core and parallel visual data processing of very large spatial and volumetric data sets.

This position requires a Ph.D. in computer science or a related computational science discipline. Established expertise in scientific visualization, interactive computer graphics, immersive technologies, computational geometry, and image processing is desired. Exposure to parallel programming and distributed systems is necessary.

The successful candidate will coordinate the visualization liaison activities in the Scientific Computing group and directly interact with external collaborators and data-set providers, including industrial and academic institutions. This requires interest not only in graphics related algorithms and data structures but also in the task and data complexity of the targeted application, and collaboration with domain scientists and other institutions. The work of the Visualization Task Lead requires familiarity with a wide variety of developed techniques, so a strong interest in learning new programming frameworks and 3rd-party code is necessary, in addition to established skills in numerical methods and applied mathematics.

This position provides the opportunity to develop personal research skills and experience and to contribute to the acquisition of new funding in order to develop the visualization axis within the OLCF.
Excellent interpersonal skills, oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and strong personal motivation are necessary. The demonstrated ability to work in a dynamic, team-oriented environment is required.

Preferred Qualifications:
Ph.D. in computer science or a related computational science discipline with 5 plus years relevant experience. Experience with C/C++, OpenGL, CUDA, scripting languages, MPI programming, high-performance I/O and data movement, and a broad background of visualization software is desired.
